Kids Lifestyle Choices: As a Parent, You May Be Remiss If You Limit Your Involvement in Their After School Activities
Wednesday, August 31st, 2011Healthy Kids Lifestyle Needs Balance
Healthy Kids Need a lifestyle which supports their mental alertness, exercising/fitness, proper sleep, nutritional needs, education, and quality family time. A balanced approach, in other words.
These days there is too much technology in the sense that kids do not get enough exercise. They have it too easy, in some ways. So as a parent, it is up to you to help your child strike a balance.
Find out, through time and exploration, what interests your son or daughter. Maybe it's tae kwon do, karate, or kickboxing. Volleyball, swimming, track or dance. Just realize that it is important to start early on this.
Your child will appreciate it long after the dance lessons, track meets, or wrestling tournaments are over. They will in fact remember the care their parent took, to see to their happiness and well-being.
Education: The Gatekeeper To Accomplishment
And if there's a certain subject (at school) that your youngster is struggling at, look into ways to assist. Sometimes you can help in ways you may not realize, at first blush. For instance, some kids really struggle in math. And it can be such a serious subject – for some, even boring.
You can make it fun on the computer. I'll give you an example. Word problems. Those involve a story; you know, if Jane travels 15 miles to the grocery, takes a detour of 5 miles, how many miles is it to get back home? Well, with those you can get inventive. Create your own "word problem" stories, type them up on your home computer, and then sit with your son or daughter during the session. Maybe inject some humor into the story, as well.
Healthy Kids: Why Caring is So Essential
Simply showing just how much you care, or are interested in helping out, can go a long way. By showing true concern, as well as showing a genuine interest in the topic helps a kid out.
If you can't take the time with the home computer idea, then you can go to the library with your studious child. Maybe help him or her with ideas for a book report or speech. Sometimes a kid is intimidated by his teacher, and if this is the case you can make an appointment to see said teacher. Explain the situation about your little girl or boy, and see if adjustments can be made – or agreements struck.
Another thing you can do is take yoga instruction together. Girls really take to this, as do some boys. The important thing is it is something the family can do together. Kundalini yoga is a good place to start.
You can check out Kundalini yoga on my Healthy Kids website. Yoga For Kids is a main category on my blog's home page. You will find some info on a Beginners Class that features basic yoga postures and breathing exercises.
