NATIONAL METALLURGISTS’ DAY (NMD) AND ANNUAL TECHNICAL MEETING (ATM)
Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime Minister of India and a great visionary, started the process of industrialisation of the newly independent India by setting up Integrated steel plants under public sector. In his memory, the Government of India, through the Ministry of Steel, has designated his birthday, the 14th November of every year, as the National Metallurgists’ Day (NMD). IIM celebrates this day by honouring eminent professionals in the way of conferring awards sponsored by the Government of India and corporate houses and the institutional awards for significant contributions in the fields of metallurgy and materials science and technology. NMD is now held along with Annual Technical Meeting (ATM), as a forum to assess the developments in the field and to disseminate knowledge generated by research. An International Symposium on a topical theme has also become a part of NMD-ATM to foster international participation and interaction.
As announced in the First Circular, 47 National Metallurgists' Day (NMD), under
the aegis of the Ministry of Steel, Government of India will be celebrated along
with the International Symposium on "Emerging Challenges for Metals &
Minerals: Engineering & Technology" (ECMMET) and the 63 Annual Technical
Meeting (ATM) of the Indian Institute of Metals at Kolkata between 14 and 17
November 2009. The event is being jointly organized by BESU and Kolkata Chapters of
the Indian Institute of Metals (IIM) in association with Burnpur, Bokaro, Bhubaneswar,
Durgapur,Ghatshila, Ishapore, Jamshedpur, Kharagpur and Ranchi Chapters.
Kolkata, the "Gateway to Eastern India" is known for its cultural, scientific and industrial heritage. The venue is
Science City Complex, located on the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass on the way to airport. The climate during
November is pleasant, the temperature varying between 18 to 25°C.
