The National Metallurgists'Awards scheme was instituted by the Ministry of Steel&Mines in 1962. The Indian Institute of Metals [IIM] continues to undertake the organizational and administrative work in connection with the selection of the National Metallurgists' Day Awardees and for the presentation of the NMD Awards at the instance of the Ministry of Steel, Govt. of India. The NMD Awards instituted by the Ministry of Steel, Government of India include:

• National MetallurgistAward Research&Academia
• Metallurgists of the year - Ferrous, Non Ferrous, Metal Science, Environment
• Young Metallurgists of the year Ferrous, Non Ferrous, Metal Science

Two memorial lectures will be delivered in the forenoon session. The N.P. Gandhi Memorial Lecture will be delivered by Prof. Kamaniyo Chattopadhyay, IISc, Bangalore and the Daya Swarup Memorial Lecture by Prof. Bhanu Prakash, IT, BHU.TheTechnical Exhibition will be inaugurated right after the forenoon session. The post-lunch session will feature a lecture delivered by the G.D. BirlaAward winner and presentations by the NMDAwardees.

There will be an entertainment programme in the evening by IIM members and some eminent artistes in the Science CityAuditorium, followed by dinner at theTolly Club.
